granny square biscuit tin

Since deciding I was going to make a series of granny squares that look like they could go in the window of a pastry shop I have made a whole two, both by Coastal Crochet.

First was this one called Fairy Picnic which looks both like a biscuit you’d eat at a picnic and the blanket you’d sit on while doing so. The edges have this woven, basket-y look which is achieved by combining front and back post treble crochet, a new stitch to add to my mental library but also will need to YouTube every time it comes up just to remind myself.

Next I started on this pie one, which I thought would involve some kind of tricky manoeuvre to achieve the lattice top. You actually just make some separate strips and sew them on. Not very exciting but it was satisfying to weave them together.

I’m trying to use up my yarn stash before I buy more, so I made it a peach pie. I feel like sweet pies are not really part of South African life so I’ve never tasted one but making a crochet version of the vegetarian Cornish lentil pie from Peregrine’s Farm Stall wouldn’t have looked quite as cute.

I loved doing the curvy crust bit but forgot to do front loops only, classic!! This meant when it got to the part where you start to turn it into a granny square I couldn’t, ‘cos I had no back loops to go into. Sad but ultimately true. So now it’s just a standalone pie, and I’ll make a separate square and sew it onto that.

P.S. Yesterday I found a sunflower granny square on the road! Sorry to whoever is probably making a cardigan with it but it’s mine now and I’m going to incorporate it into my next project but I’ll think kindly of you every time I see it if that helps.
